Multi Mates with Johanna from Culinary Studio eeeat
Where the designer turned chef grabs vegan lunches, goes on creative dates and finds hidden gems | Tips 10.-13.07.
Hello and welcome back to the second edition of Multi Mates, my guest format where I invite people who actively make a change in this city to share their own stories and favorite places in Munich.
Today, you’ll be meeting Johanna Alscheken, the woman behind the culinary studio eeeat. Johanna and I only crossed paths this year, but for some reason, it feels like we’ve known each other for much longer. Maybe because we met at a time when we both actively said yes to Munich - Johanna opening her own physical studio and me starting Multi Muc. Or maybe because we share the same birthday...who knows. Anyway, to me, Johanna is the perfect example of someone being the change they want to see in the city. Welcome to Multi Mates!
Hiii, can you introduce yourself and describe what you do with eeeat?
I’m Johanna, a multidisciplinary designer based in Munich, combining my background in fashion with my passion for food. After training as a master tailor and studying fashion design, I spent years in the fashion industry, but the kitchen has always been my creative safe space.
In 2022, I started sharing my creations on Instagram. What began as a personal passion evolved into eeeat, my culinary studio for concept catering, curated dinners, vegan recipes, and creative food projects. At eeeat, I merge design and food to create thoughtful, memorable experiences.

How do you feel about Munich?
I used to have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Munich. When I was younger, I was sure I’d be one of the first to leave. I pictured myself living in Paris, Berlin, or New York. But with every degree and career step, staying in Munich always made the most sense. So I stayed, and I’m glad I did.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the calm, the safety, and the quality of life here. And even though Munich might seem a bit polished from the outside, there’s so much more beneath the surface. You just have to dig a little deeper, but once you do, you find an amazing creative scene full of young, talented people doing really exciting things. I’ve found my people and my places, and I wouldn’t want to miss it.

Do you see Munich with new eyes since you started eeeat? If so, in what way?
Since starting eeeat and stepping into the culinary world professionally, my creative circle has grown a lot. Before, I mostly knew people from fashion and design, but now I’ve connected with so many amazing people in the food scene – chefs, artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs who approach food in completely new ways.

I definitely see Munich with new eyes now. The city feels more vibrant, more open, and more connected than it did a few years ago. But at the same time, Munich can be a tough place for creatives. It’s very traditional in many ways, and sometimes you have to fight a bit harder to carve out your space. But I think that challenge also pushes us to create better, more thoughtful work. It makes the scene here special.
🍝 FOOD
Favorite places for…
Easy Lunch
Asia Markt Thang Long - cheap and easy, very fresh ingredients, feels like a short holiday in Vietnam; run by an elderly couple, to me they are always friendly but I heard some other storys haha
MARI - simple dishes, always fresh; you can mix and match almost every meal (add cheese/meats etc.)
Breadbox - the vegan smashburgers are a staple in my lunch rotation (especially on event/prep days); easy, delicious and not just for vegans (you prob. wouldnt even know they are completely plantbased)
Date
Forever Thirsty (evening) - cutest spot to have a sip of delicious natural wine in the sun (though I might be a bit biased, since they are close friends and I work with them a lot)
Bageri (day time) - share a cinnamon or cardamom bun and delicious coffee, how could you not fall in love? Again - I am biased because I love them and work with them whenever I need something bread related
Coffee
Café Faber - a staple
Fortuna Cafébar - when I was living in Haidhausen I would sit there on a daily
Pacandé - for take away and beans (my favourites)
Amulet - the iced coffee with coconut milk is p e r f e c t
Hidden Gems
Bab al Yemen - feels like a holiday, the food is amazing!!
Chat Junction - tiiiiiiny imbiss at the s-bahn station Isartor with the most delicious indian food like Samosa Chat
🌳 PLACES
Hofflohmärkte - Every weekend, a different part of the city opens up its backyards for a flea market. It’s the perfect way to discover or rediscover the city.
Kunstoase - just browse (feels like you enter another dimension)
Northern Part of Englischer Garten - where the grass is high, its quiet and no tourist in sight.
Hirschau - my all time fav Biergarten. On sundays they usually have live music (if you are lucky its a Rock'n'Roll coverband playing and the elderly regulars are dancing the day away!)
