Hi hello and welcome back! Even though summer seems to be playing hard to get still, my inner clock is already fully set to summertime and with summertime I mean ICE CREAM time.
I don’t usually have much of a sweet tooth, but when it comes to gelato, my brain works differently. At the moment, I need a scoop of pistachio every single day, even when it’s raining. Ice cream, I feel, is not too different from coffee as in people are having strong feelings around both. This list isn’t a ‘best-of’, it’s just my personal recommendations as per usual. Naturally, I know some neighborhoods better than others, so I need your help. Please share your favorite Eisdiele with me here ↓
Lorenzo Corno
This picture does not do Lorenzo justice. Sorry. Lorenzo is my (almost) daily go-to and yes, it’s because I live close by, but I genuinely think it’s one of the very best ice creams in town. It used to be affiliated with the famous Balla Beni (which I decided not to list because I actually never go and you all know it anyways), but is independent now. Go and have the white chocolate with pistacchio - trust me. It doesn’t taste like white chocolate, just pure pistacchio deliciousness.

Bartu
Honestly, I have my ups and downs with Bartu, but recently I’ve really been enjoying it again. Anyone who grew up in Munich still remembers Bartu as the local shoe empire. Owner Thomas Bartu sold the business in the 1980s and fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming an ice cream maker. Today, there are two shops, one in Maxvorstadt and one in Schwabing (this one has an adjacent pizzeria so you can have dinner and dessert in one go). I love ice cream that isn’t too sweet and Bartu really gets that.

True & 12
I only recently discovered this shop and liked it so much, I went back just a day later. They always do 12 handmade flavors and are particularly well known for ‘Happy Monkey’ (banana, caramel and chocolate bits) I haven't tried this one but can report that my second go-to flavor, hazelnut, was one of the best I had in the city.
Rosenheimer Str.14
Daily 12pm-9pm
Jessas
Usually I’m highly suspicious when a shop offers super funky flavors like Hanuta, Brezl or Pineapple Pear Sage, buuut Jessas is pulling it off and even manages not to be too sweet. I also like that they serve coffee too so you can have an Affogato on hot, sleepy summer afternoons.

Alain Ducasse
I know, this one’s a little unexpected. I, and probably you too, have passed the chocolatier shop at Viktualienmarkt a million times but never thought of getting ice cream there. Thanks to my friend Caroline, who moved here from NYC and isn’t repelled by outrageous prices, I discovered that they make insanely good ice cream. They don’t do anything under two flavors and I think it was 6€? My brain chose peace and forgot.

Eisbrunnen
Last summer, I was blessed with a multitude of intolerances and had to cut out lactose completely. Most of the spots I mentioned do great sorbets too, but sometimes I just crave that creamy texture you usually only get from milk-based ice cream. That’s when I found Eisbrunnen who do only vegan ice cream. They have two shops, one downtown and one in Maxvorstad

Ciampini Pop Up at Haus im Tal
For full transparency, I haven’t been yet, buuuut I love the idea of bringing one of Rome’s best gelato spots to Munich for the season. Plus, the inner city isn’t exactly overflowing with great ice cream, so I wanted to include this one for you to check out and try.

Sarcletti

I would love to love the classic oldschool ones but I just don’t really. I know a lot of you do though, so I asked David, my bf, to round off this list with a true classic. He’s sending you to his favorite traditional Eisdiele: Sarcletti at Rotkreuzplatz.
