Oldschool Italians Alla Papa | Tips 28.5-1.6.
A tribute to my dad and white-tablecloth Italians
Hello friends and welcome to another lovely Wednesday-that-feels-like-a-Friday 💃. For anyone like me who never quite knows which holiday it is this time: it’s Christi Himmelfahrt, Jesus ascending to heaven and so on.
It’s also Father’s Day in Germany, so I thought this would be a nice chance to dedicate this week’s edition to the person who gave me my appreciation for gastronomy & restaurants: my beloved late Papa.
My father’s love for restaurants obviously wasn’t limited to Italians, but I’m pretty sure that if you had forced him to eat Italian every day for the rest of his life, he wouldn’t have minded at all. Munich, as we all know, is full of Italian spots: Neapolitan pizzerias, Instagram-trattorias, cafés and bars for Sprizz all day. But today, we’re focusing on a specific kind: white tablecloth, old-school Italians. The kind with amazing produce, long wine lists and loyal regulars who’ve been coming for a decade. Italians alla Papa.
Beccofino
For anyone close to me, this one won’t come as a surprise. It was my dad’s absolute favorite restaurant. He just called it “Beim Pietro,” as if Beccofino were the owner’s living room. For those not quite as close to Pietro as my father was, the atmosphere can sometimes feel just a little bit earnest. But if you know what to expect and you’re not looking for a loud party, you’ll have one of the best, most authentic Italian meals in the city.

Tiratardi

Tiratardi hasn’t been on my family’s radar for a long time, even though I grew up around the corner. The small spot, right on the edge between Maxvorstadt and Schwabing, has been around for 25 years and is especially lovely in summer, when the driveway turns into a shaded terrace. If you go, try the Tagliata di Tonno.
Kurfürstenstr. 41
Mon-Fr: 12pm-2.30pm & 6-11pm
Sat: 6-11pm
L’Osteria Italiana
I know, I know. This one is a bit of an edge case. It’s definitely not a ‘hidden gem’ and does attract the occasional celeb. My dad used to come here for lunch every Saturday, my grandfather already celebrated birthdays here. This place has been around for 135 (!) years, I’ll spare you the anecdotes about Hitler at this point.
The interior, with its lavishly framed oil paintings, the mural room and the dark wood paneling apparently hasn’t changed much since it opened in the late 19th century. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality is consistently great. I really like their Saltimbocca, and if it’s your thing, you need to order the Zabaione for dessert: Prosecco, Marsala and sugar, whipped up by hand right at your table for at least 15 minutes.
Schellingstr. 62
Mon-Sat: 12-2.30pm & 6.30-11pm
Acetaia

Anyone who’s been to Italy knows that the interior is almost never a giveaway for quality. I’ve had some of the best meals sitting on ugly chairs under horrific lighting. Acetaia stands out because it does both: it’s delicious and really pretty too. Their speciality is a 25-year-old aged Aceto Balsamico (hence the name), which they produce near Modena. At Acetaia, you truly get what people mean when they say the best thing about Munich is how close it is to Italy.

Thu-Tue: 12-2.30pm & 6.30-10pm
Hostaria Fratelli
I only discovered this restaurant recently but my immediate reaction was: My dad would’ve loved it here. Not sure how to describe the interior but it’s this very classic upscale Italian Occhio-everywhere vibe. If you know you know. I’d love to come back in summer and sit outside. Food has been really great but on the pricier side.
