Top 10 Japanese Foodspots in Muc | Tips Easter Weekend
Never settle for supermarket Sushi (unless you’re in Japan)
Hello everyone and almost happy Easter 🐣 Thank you so much for the lovely feedback I’m receiving, it really means a lot! Because you seemed to enjoy my Japanese-themed edition last week, and since I’m still away in the land of ramen and rice, this time we’re diving into my top picks for Japanese food in Munich.

I did some research (like, chatted with the gpt) and found out that Munich actually has the second-largest Japanese community just behind Düsseldorf. Allegedly, Arabellapark has the highest density of Japanese residents, which makes sort of sense given that most originate from Tokyo and Osaka and probably feel most at home surrounded by ‘high’ (lol) rise buildings?
Anyway, it feels like Munich and Japan have always had a great vibe (remember our sister city Sapporo with all her generous gifts). Since the mid-'80s, the very first sushi restaurants began to open, introducing a whole new world of food possibilities.
Today, there are hundreds of places, lots of sushi, some Ramen but also a ton of ‘panasian’ restaurants where Vietnamese curries and Inside-out rolls are on the same menu. I’m not judging, actually, I do quite enjoy the occasional fried roll slathered in mayonnaise that would give the real Japanosseurs nightmares.
But now, let’s look at spots that really get it all right in my opinion.

J-Bar
The only ones who truly bring the essence of an Izakaya to Munich. Amazing Karaage (fried chicken),Takoyaki (fried octopus balls) and frozen Kirin Beer.
Maistr.28
Thur-Mon: 6pm-11pm (but check site before going)
Haguruma
Another favorite, even though I haven’t been since they changed to a Ramen concept in the beginning of the year. Delicious Sushi, really great Gyozas and Karaage. Very laid-back vibe.
Baaderstr.62
Tues-Sat: 12pm-2pm, 6pm-9.30pm (no lunch on Sat)
Kim’s Sushi
No-fuss sushi place run by a lovely Japanese family. My personal go-to. In winter, they only do take-out, in summer they have 2 little tables outside.
Herzogstr.91
Sun-Fr: 5pm-10pm
Sushi Sano
I always struggle to find good spots downtown but this one is an exception. I both like their sushi spot between Stachus and Sendlinger Tor and their noodlehouse by Isartor for a solo lunch or early dinner.
Sushi:
Brunnstr. 6
Tues-Sat: 12pm-9.30pm
Noodle:
Zweibrückenstr. 19
Mon-Sat: 11.30am-4pm, 5-8pm
Sushiya Sansaro
A classic, tucked away in Amalienpassage. Definitely more of a treat, great quality and calm, sophisticated atmosphere.
Amalienstr.89
Wed-Mon: 6pm-11pm

Japatapa Toshibar
In the same location where well-known ‘Sushibar’ was once, Japatapa is run by former ‘Toshi’ chefs Toshio and Tamiko Kobatake. If you never heard of any of these, never mind and just go, it’s authentic Japanese cuisine on a really high level.
Marschallstr.2
Tues-Sun:5pm-10pm
Takumi
I knew and loved the Takumi Ramen brand from Berlin so I was all the more excited when they opened their Schwabing branch. There are 2 other shops and quite frankly I’m confused on how they all belong together but will list the three anyways:
Schwabing
Occamstr.6
Tues-Fr: 12pm-2.30pm, 5.30pm-9pm
Sat-Sun: 12pm-9pm
Maxvorstadt
Gabelsbergerstr.77
Daily: 11.45am-9pm
Viktualienmarkt (Chicken & Vegan)
Westenriederstr.37
Daily: 12pm-9pm
AOI Ramen
Really like their Ramen and Gyoza and also has a true Japanese feel to it. Would go more often if it’d be in my hood.
Volkartstr.22
Tues-Fr: 11.30am-1.30pm, 5.30-9pm
Sat-Sun: 5.30-9pm

Tushita Teehaus
They don’t just do great tea and baked goods but also a really nice daily vegan lunch (on the pricier side to be fair). There’s also ‘Tushita Gallery’ where they host tea ceremonies, sound baths and other interesting events.
Teahouse:
Klenzestr.53
Mon-Wed: 11.30am-8pm, Thurs-Sat: 9.30am-8pm, Sun: 11am-6pm
Gallery:
Westermühlstr.23
Open depending on events
MIKADO (Japanese delicatessen shop)
The largest Japanese food store in Munich - around since 1986! You’ll find everything, from rice over spices but also bento boxes, books and pottery.
Baaderstr.12
Mon-Sat: 10am-7pm
There are a couple more on my list that I really want to check out but haven’t been yet so I share once I can truly judge! If you have any recommendations or feedback to that list, please get in touch <3

That’s it for this week! Even if there’s not as much happening as usual, I still hope you have a great long Easter weekend. If you're away like I am: see you next week back on German ground and with some very exciting things coming up!
If you like Multi Muc, I’m always happy to see you share it with someone who’d enjoy it too.
Lots of love from Naoshima, Japan
