Golden hour spots where the spritz hits just right

Hello friends! I don’t want to take credit for the shift in weather buuuut let’s just say it feels like summer officially arrived right after my Ice Cream edition last week. So I figured we’d stay on the sunny theme and talk about my favorite kind of drink: the summer sundowner 🍸

Over the past few years, I’ve become much more of an occasional drinker which means there are stretches when I don’t drink at all or just enjoy one perfect drink. And in my dream scenario, that one drink is a glowy-orange something-Spritz or a sexy tequila-based number like a Margarita or Paloma - ideally consumed during golden sunset hour.

So where do we go?

Goldene Bar

Duh. The sundowner classic. Thanks to the size of the Haus der Kunst terrace, it always feels casual and easy. Come with a group, bring your kids, sit on the stairs or just stand and take in the view of the Englischer Garten. Public Possession is doing an artist residency at HdK right now, and every last Friday of the month they host a special program - could be a nice combo with your drink.

Schumann’s

I don’t think we need an intro here. While I have preferences on when to go (Sunday night for Schnitzel) and where to sit (outside in Hofgarten or inside upstairs at the long table) - for the full Sundowner and people watching (glotz) vibe, go on and sit out front on Odeonsplatz.

Kulturdachgarten

To those of you who think I’m a bit of a cynic, this might come as a surprise but I LOVE sunsets (in an obsessive way). Sadly, Munich isn’t sunset friendly. We’re not very hilly and we also don’t have many non-douchy rooftop bars. I like Kulturdachgarten on top of the old Gasteig because it doesn’t try too hard (I mean, look at the name…) and attracts a really mixed crowd. The drinks are good and the views are epic. Come during the week, there’s a mean line downstairs sometimes on weekends.

Weinstube (Dantler)

The fantastic Dantler restaurant (that I’ll be featuring in more detail another time) has a bar next door and contrary to its name - Weinstube - they serve amazing drinks beyond wine. Sitting outside on the busy Werinherstrasse is more of a Naples or Athens vibes but still a holiday vibe.

Apollon Stufenbar

The official bar on top of the stairs leading to the opera doesn’t open until June 24, but I’ve been coming anyway, just bringing a drink from one of the nearby spots or, if security isn’t looking, sneaking one out from the inside bar.

Wiener Platz

I love Wiener Platz and growing up on the ‘other side of the Isar’ I only really discovered my love for Haidhausen in the past two years. The golden hour vibes here are impeccable, I suggest just grabbing a glas from Weinhäusl or the ‘Wein trifft Schokolade’ stand and sit wherever the sun still hits.
